Command & Conquer 3 Demo on XBOX LIVE!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I downloaded the Command & Conquer 3 demo last evening and had a chance to play the first two GDI tours available as part of the download. As a former C & C player from the PC realm, I was very impressed with how the game held on to many of its old attributes while still offering plenty in the way of new gaming enhancements and capabilities. The demo version even gives you the opportunity to deploy and fire the ION Cannon, a space-based WMD that virtually annihilates your opponent with one pull of the trigger.

Needless to say , I was impressed, and C & C 3 will be one of the next titles on my "to buy" list as a result. Can't wait to play the rest of the game. I bet the LIVE! action will be intense.

Guitar Hero II 360: Impossible To Find

Seems as if demand has vastly outstripped supply for the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero. An analyst with A.G. Edwards has found that of 100 stores surveyed on Monday, April 23, only one (1) had the game in stock. Stores surveyed expect more shipments of the game to come in next week, but many said that units are snatched up within hours of arriving on shelves. No second controllers were available at any of the stores surveyed. The analyst said the supply issues could be laid on the production of the guitar controller, and that Activision is looking for ways to get those numbers up. The analyst also said that none of the stores surveyed had Wii in stock, but you knew that.

'Daily Show,' 'Colbert Report' headed to Xbox Live

Got a hankering for the latest episodes of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart or The Colbert Report but don't have cable? You may no longer need to go scrounging around the Internet for clips. Microsoft announced Tuesday that starting immediately, all new episodes of the shows will be available for download on Xbox Live 24 hours after airing.
The company didn't say how much the episodes would cost to download, but Microsoft has tried to keep downloads competitive with those available on other networks, such as iTunes. To date, it has offered
hundreds of hours of movies and TV shows via the Xbox Live network, which has more than 6 million subscribers. All episodes of the Comedy Central shows also are available on iTunes.

Silver Xbox Live Members Get Monster Madness too

The demo for Monster Madness has been available on Xbox Live's Gold Members since this past Friday, but come this Thursday, Silver Members will be able to grab it, too. Normally, folks with Silver Memberships can't avail themselves of Marketplace items, but SouthPeak Games is making an exception in this case. Neat, but if this sort of thing becomes a trend I'm going to feel like a real jackass for paying for Gold, know what I'm sayin'?
The demo gives players a fair taste of what the game has to offer: there's your solo play, your co-op play, and then your multiplayer via deathmatches and capture-the-flag. You'll only get to see three maps, but you'll get to try out a decent cross section of the weapons, so by the time you've wrung the last bit of entertainment out of the demo, you should have a pretty darn good idea whether or not you think Monster Madness is worth the full asking price or is just a weekend rental.

TimeShift for XBOX 360, due October '07???

Yes, the question marks really are the story on this shooter, as it has been in development for quite some time with several delays. Sierra, the developer, is now saying that October '07 looks like a pretty solid release date for this unique time based/controlled app.

XBTR

A new look at the redesigned time altering shooter.

It's been a long time since TimeShift first came around, and... we'll resist the time related jokes. You've had enough of those with Duke Nukem Forever, we're sure. Let's get to what's new in Sierra's shooter.
The design of the
game has changed quite a bit in the past year since Sierra decided to delay it, with the biggest shift being that the the three time control methods have been simplified into one context sensitive button. This button lets you slow, pause, or rewind time based on the situation you are in. You may not always know what you are getting when you hit the button, but your character's "smart suit" will suggest the best possible use of your powers.
For example, your suit knows that when you've been struck with a grenade, the best solution is to rewind time so that the grenade never comes in contact with you, instead of leaving it stuck or slowly detonating on your body. In an area where the player must use a large teetering cylinder to cross over a fence, the suit will stop time in order to allow safe passage.

Gears of War "Annex" update issues reported

XBTR has learned from several sources that gamers who have downloaded the recent GoW Annex patch are reporting several "glitches" while playing the game.

Following are quotes and comments XBTR located while researching reported problems with the patch. Please remember the comments and quotes below do not necessarily reflect the opinion of XBOX Team Rochester or it membership.

Please feel free to post comments below regarding your experience with the "Annex" patch.

XBTR

"some reports of glitching problems have surfaced following the new Annex update for Gears Of War. Most complaints concern the fact that cheaters are still able to 'glitch' during multiplayer games and that the 'Roadie Run' seems a little more sluggish than usual."
"Gears of War's latest auto update has been released for a few days now and the overall consensus has been pretty positive. A new gametype, check. More balancing of weapons, check. Sticking to every damn wall and glitching still not fixed, check. Wait ... still sticking to walls and cheaters still able to glitch? Yes, it's true friends, the latest auto update is far from perfect not fixing all our glitching woes and even making one annoyance worse. The list of new fixes in the latest Gears update specifically stated that they have "Adjusted Roadie Run: Reduced frequency of accidentally grabbing cover while running ". But in truth, most everyone we've talked to agrees that the opposite is occurring. Roadie running now feels like you have fourteen gallons of Elmer's glue smothered over your body causing you to stick to every wall and object when running. Not only that, but the weapon slide and other glitches are still occurring. True, Epic did fix the "traditional" ways of pulling off such glitches, but (literally) minutes after the update went live YouTube videos were posted showing new ways to pull off the same moves. Glitching fixed? Nope, newly found button combos activate all the same glitches."
- forums.maxconsole.net

"Is it just me or does it seem to be more laggy? Plus whenever i rodie run i seem to get stuck behind walls and stuff when i don't want to. This wasn't a problem before the patch but now i'm getting stuck behind cover all the time." - forums.realmedia.com

Life’s a ‘Witch’ on Xbox

By Doug Elfman, "The Game Dork" - courtesy theedge.bostonherald.com

"The first game girl I fell in love with was Jill Valentine. She got trapped in an evil mansion. I guided her through its shadowy hallways, where devil dogs jumped at her through glass windows and undead monsters tore at her torso with enormous “clip-clop” claws.
Jill was stunning as a strong siren, firing bullets and a grudge, starting with 1996’s “Resident Evil.” In retrospect, she was overdressed, sporting a military uniform, sometimes a black skirt and blue tube top. All class, that Jill.
If you beat the masterful “Resident Evil,” the next time you played, you could dress down Jill in a closet. That option was not included in the Milla Jovovich movies based on the game series."

Quake III Team Arena for XBOX 360???

Found the following on the idsoftware site, with a cross reference to gamersreports.com

Don't know how much truth there is to the rumor, if any, however if it is true, XBOX 360 Quake fans are in for a huge treat!

IcemanXBTR

"There is a new game for the Xbox360 rated over at the ESRB. If you search for "Quake" at the linked search page, you will see the first result listed is Quake III: Team Arena. We can only assume that this title will be hitting the Xbox Live Arcade soon. Sounds encouraging!"

Xbox 360 QWERTY thumb keyboard is official

The years old rumors of a QWERTY Xbox controller are true. Microsoft is finally launching a QWERTY thumb keyboard for the Xbox 360, a welcome addition for those of us who don't want yet another keyboard sitting around in our living room. Unfortunately, this officially marks the point where the Xbox 360 just has too freaking many peripherals, and starts to look a bit like it's grubbing. Still, if you want to use the Dashboard's new chat features you'll probably want to snap one of these up right quick. The details you need to know:
The thumb keyboard plugs into the headphone / data jack on the bottom of the controller. It comes bundled with its own headset, since it doesn't pass the signal through, and cannot work with current peripherals.
The keyboard is backlit; the chat bubble icon in the photos will be an MSN icon.
It will be released in the summer. No word on how much, though.
We got a chance to check it out. The tactility is nice, but it's a bit heavy with all the rest of the weight of the 360 controller.

Gears of War Title Update with Annex Available Now

The “Gears of War” title update, which includes a new versus multiplayer gametype called Annex, is available several hours ahead of its scheduled release. In Annex, gamers seize victory by keeping control over key map locations, or objectives, long enough to collect a winning number of points. Every map contains two to five identified objectives available for capture, with one objective active at a time. Objectives are based on map weapon-spawn locations and have a potential value of 60 points toward either team’s score. Teams collect those points by maintaining ownership of an objective until all 60 points have been distributed. Every second that a team controls an objective, the team gets one point. When an objective falls to zero points, the next objective is selected at random.

Xbox Live welcomes Windows buddies

The steady march towards convergence continues, with the announcement that MSN Instant Messenger buddies will soon be integrated with the Xbox Live Friends List, thus allowing people to chat with their non-gamer mates from the comfort of their own sofas from May this year.

From the release:
"Bringing the largest IM community in the world, Windows Live Messenger, to Xbox 360 makes sense, as Xbox LIVE has really become the largest social network on television," said Jerry Johnson, product unit manager of Xbox LIVE at Microsoft. "For our growing community of 6 million on Xbox LIVE, using Xbox 360 is a very social, connected experience. They are using Xbox 360 to play games, music and movies while simultaneously communicating with one another through video, voice and text chat. With this announcement we are simultaneously expanding the access of Xbox LIVE users to existing friends and family while introducing Windows Live Messenger users to the benefits of Xbox 360."

The skates are on at the big companies to create the MySpace of home consoles, as they chase the enigmatic non-gamers down on their chosen interactive platforms, tempting them into the fold through subtle non-gaming networking opportunities. But who will crack it? Microsoft with their existing powerhouse of social applications (like Instant Messenger and Windows-enabled mobile phones) or Sony, with their library of technologies (including mobile phones) and forward-thinking software (like Little Big Planet)?
But wait a second, what about the games?

Apple TV's Pretty, but Xbox 360 Delivers Where It Counts

Apple TV and Xbox 360 both transfer video from the computer to an HD-equipped television. Though Apple's hardware is elegant in appearance and its menu screens are far more graceful than those of Xbox, its so-called HDTV output is simply horrible when playing videos purchased from the iTunes store. Xbox's imagery excels, but the hardware is loud and bulky. Apple has graced the public with another smooth, white, exquisitely designed gadget, this time aiming at making it easier to play iTunes movies and songs on the living-room TV set.
Too bad, then, that where looks really matter -- in the quality of the video on the TV screen -- the US$299 Apple TV comes up very short. It's as if Apple had launched an iPod that sounded like a cassette player.

Guitar Hero rocks Xbox

Wannabe rockers/ Xbox 360 owners can shred their virtual axes today
For those about to rock, the next generation of Guitar Hero II salutes you.
It is a testament to the phenomenon of this music-based video game that five months after its initial launch it's still one of the hottest games around. It has already sold more than 1.7 million copies – and that's while being available only to PlayStation 2 owners. That changes today, as the game comes out for the Xbox 360, with additional songs and new features for the ever-growing legion of wannabe rockers.
"This is the first time we're going on the next generation platform and we really want to come out with a bang, even though it's the same songs and same game," says Bryan Lam, a press specialist for Red Octane, the publisher of the game.

Effects Coming to 360 Guitar Hero II?

A new report says that the instruction manual for Guitar Hero II for Xbox 360 finally confirms effects pedals are imminent; RedOctane is still playing coy with Next-Gen on the effects issue, but says downloadable content will be here "soon."

Developer Harmonix and Activision-owned publisher RedOctane have always touted Guitar Hero as the ultimate rockstar experience outside of actually playing in a real rock band, but the game has been missing one key component to the rock guitarist experience: effects pedals. Now Joystiq, which obtained a copy of the Xbox 360 version of the game prior to its release later this week, posts an image of the new version's instruction manual. A diagram for the new X-plorer guitar peripheral points out an "Effects Pedal port (pedals sold separately)".

Xbox to Lead U.S. Market Through 2009

That's the verdict according to A.G. Edwards analyst, Bill Kreher. Sony, unsurprisingly, doesn't agree.

Kreher said in a phone interview with Next-Gen, “Basically the 360 had the first-mover advantage, so they already had 5 million units in US households before the PS3 and Wii launched. That’s a lot of the reason why I think they’ll end up winning.”
He added that Xbox Live and its 6 million users have a lot to do with his projections. “Live’s been a huge bonus for them,” he said.

Bitten by the video game bug once again, Spider-Man hits all the consoles... is three Spidey's magic number?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
"Above the city, below the streets, beyond what you know," the trailer for Spider-Man 3 the video game proclaims. Developer Treyarch and publisher Activision had come to a seedy bar in San Francisco's famed Tenderloin district to unveil the game, the first offering in the Spider-Man series to make it onto next-generation platforms.
The game puts the popular web-slinger in a gorgeous electronic Manhattan, complete with flashing neon signs in its Times Square, and more than 20 miles of subways and sewers. Its plot is based largely on the events of the upcoming Spider-Man 3 film, but Treyarch's executive producer Chris Archer is quick to suggest the game far exceeds the scope of the movie. Players here will be able to crawl, leap, soar, and swing across New York City; perform missions; move from indoor environments to outdoor ones with nary a pause for load screens; and battle such noted superpowered Spider-foes as the Scorpion, Venom, Green Goblin, and the aforementioned Sandman.

XBTR has learned that this game is due to be released in May '07

DiRT Preview (Xbox 360)

The Xbox 360 has a lot of racing games, offering something for nearly everyone. Simulation fans have Project Gotham Racing 3, with uber-sim Forza Motorsport 2 waiting in the wings. Those who prefer a more a more arcadey experience can pop in either of the next-gen Need for Speed games, while fans of drifting can slide around corners with Ridge Racer 6. Hell, even people who don’t like “traditional” racing games will have a blast with Burnout Revenge, where trading paint is just as important as crossing the finish line. However, there’s one type of racing game that hasn’t made its next-gen mark just yet: the rally racer. Given that Codemasters set the bar high with their Colin McRae-branded series, it’s not surprising that they will be the ones to bring rally racing to the Xbox 360 for the first time. However, while DiRT definitely fits neatly into the rally category, it’s undergone a number of changes during its move into the future. The Colin McRae games were know for their uber-realistic driving action, and while DiRT isn’t really an arcade-style racer, it’s not as unforgiving and challenging as previous iterations. This seems to be an attempt to lure some new gamers in, as the success of Sony’s MotorStorm is clear proof that racing fans aren’t afraid to get down and dirty. Although we were able to actually get our hands on the game, it looked like the handling was a bit tighter than it used to be.
